Alphas and Betas and Releases! Oh MY!

Yes I used a Oz pun this afternoon.. No I do not for the life of me know why. Onward with the post!

So I am sitting here this afternoon perusing the E3 info that has come out of the past couple of days. I’m excited for some things and headdesking (that’s a thing right?) at others. One thing I now know for sure is that I need to buy a Wii U stat. Seriously… Mario Kart 8(Recently Released), Hyrule Warriors, Bayonetta 2, Super Smash Bros, Legend of Zelda, MARIO MAKER, ect. Stop it Nintendo.. my penis can only get so erect.

I am a doctor!

In any case I was checking out all the news while updating my PC in the process. I was updating all my games I have installed and realized I am in ALOT of Alphas/Betas right now. There are also many up and coming betas that I am about to play. I realize now that in the past couple of weeks 90% of my gameplay has been in a game that is unfinished! So I wanted to list off/talk about a few of them with you. Here is what I am currently in:

  • ArcheAge
  • Battlefield Hardline
  • Destiny
  • Heroes of the Storm
  • Landmark
  • Shroud of the Avatar
  • World of Warcraft: Warlords of Draenor
  • —————————–
  • —————————–
  • Eternal Crusade [July 25th]
  • ArcheAge

    Website

I originally looked into this game due to the fact that it is very similar to Ultima Online. A game I would pay 20 a month for if it ever re-released with updated graphics and a new fan base. It is a free open world RPG where you are welcome to level your skills, craft, sail, kill people, ect. It has a prison system where you are tried by your peers and given a time sentence. So if you kill someone you can be caught and put to trial. You can plead your case and you could even get away with it if people think you did it for the right reasons. Ex: Killing a total douche guy who is always stealing everyones stuff or something.

Character creation is like most MMOs but the one thing that sticks out here is the class animations. They look really cool while you are trying to decide which direction your going to level your character. The leveling is smooth there is not alot of running back and forth like traditional MMOs. However its not GW2 awesome. I would say its a mid point between GW2 and WoW.

    glider

    WEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEE!

Crafting in the game is extensive. You can even build your own house and craft ships. There is some action combat in the game which is cool as well. I am a fan of action combat. It keeps you involved in the game and seems less boring. The game also has climbing and hang gliding which are just added extras that are really cool. I once scaled the side of a cliff and then jumped off with my hang glider and flew around for a few minutes. It was pretty sweet! I will play this at launch.

    Battlefield Hardline

    Website

Ahh Hardline.. I am a big fan of the Battlefield series. It took me in when I was in my teens with the first in its series “Battlefield 1942”. We played that game forever! Now I have a Battlefield/APB crossover AKA Cops VS Robbers free style open world game?! YES PLEASE?! For those of you who don’t know what APB is I pity you. (Look here) I have not been able to play this yet but I just got in and you can bet your ass I will be playing it in the upcoming weeks! Check out the video here:

    Destiny

    Website

Literally Alpha just started yesterday for PS4 so I have had no chance to play this one yet either. However this one is on my top list of badass games to play this year. I wish it was out on PC but it seems I have to wait a month later to get into beta there. I will be on my PS4 tonight checking this out!!

    Heroes of the Storm

    Website

Some of you know that I am on a SMITE kick right now. I love a good MOBA every once in a while. Let me just say.. Heroes of the Storm is badass! I love the game so much and you will probably say it’s because I am a Blizzard fanboy. (Your right by the way.)

The thing about Heroes is that it addresses some of the issues I have with MOBAs today. It focuses more on the PVP aspect of the game and yet still provides extra mechanics that add to the games “fun factor.” A big issue I see that most people have with Heroes right now is that Creep score is non existent. This is awesome to me.. I HATE CS. Not to say that games that use CS suck. I just hate the fact that I have to worry about the minions when all I really want to do is punch the other guy in the face. Heroes takes the CS worry away. Why? Because every creep/player/objective/tower kill or whatever is shared by the team. You get a kill the whole team gains xp. In my opinion this is awesome! It is however a two edged sword. Lets say you feed top lane. It is not just the top lane champs that now have the upper hand. It’s the WHOLE TEAM! Yikes! I still like the mechanic and think it allows you to focus more on the PVP aspect of the game.

The second thing it brings to the table are its unique mechanics for each map. On one map your collecting gold coins to bribe the pirate captain to bombard the other team’s base. On another map your collecting bones to summon a giant bone golem that fights on your side. They have a few others but you get the point. There are some interesting side quest type things you can do on the map to help out the team.

Lastly Heroes has NO gear… This one is a toss up for me. I know a bunch of people have issues with a no gear system. They say that gear can make or break the game and I agree to a point. There have been times in League or Smite where a simple gear change late game wins the round. At the same time I can see how not having gear just allows you to focus more on fighting. I am still on the fence about this. We will see where they go with it.

All in all I really like the game. I hope it does well and I hope we see more champs soon. It’s so awesome to play as the Queen of Blades and smack down the Lich King. It’s a fanboy’s dream!!

    Landmark (Everquest Next)

    Website

Everquest Next/Landmark is probably one of my most anticipated MMOs in the past few years. If you have not seen or heard about it you should check it out. For now since I am only in the beta for Landmark we will only talk about it.

Landmark is like the world builder of Everquest Next. Basically you can harvest and build things in Landmark. It’s pretty sweet you can lay claim to a piece of land, carve that land out and then build anything you want on it. You use various building tools to help build your creations. You can save these creations for when the game actually comes out and when you harvest enough materials to make them you can just place them down. You can also sell these creations through their online store to other players later on down the line. Build a badass castle? Sell it online for some money/gold.

Yes a regular dude like you and I made this FROM SCRATCH.

Yes a regular dude like you and I made this FROM SCRATCH.

Landmark shows off a little bit of how you can effect the world as your mining and doing other stuff like building structures. As of right now whatever you change in the world resets every 24 hours so if I dig out a giant cave it will stay there until the next day. I am unsure if this is how it will work or just how it works while we are testing the game. My assumption is this is how it will work otherwise you would just have random holes all throughout your game world.

Recently they have been implementing new stuff like underground cave systems. They added a few magic items like the Belt of the Zephyr which lets you fly around. They are supposedly going to just keep adding stuff into Landmark until they have Everquest Next so it will be interesting to watch the game evolve over time.

    Shroud of the Avatar

    Website

Shroud of the Avatar is one of those kickstarters I grabbed up almost instantly. It being developed by the creator of Ultima Online and is shaping up to be very similar. Some of you may or may not know that Ultima was a skill based system. Same goes with Shroud. Also custom player housing and open world play are just some of the highlights of this game. I love that player housing is placed on the world map and not “instanced.” Keep an eye on this game as it is shaping up to be a good one.

    WoW: Warlords of Draenor

    Website

Surprise surprise, another expansion for WoW is releasing soon. As much as I love Blizzard they need to let this one die. Make a new one or lets see a Warcraft 4. Something than the empty shell that they have now. To be honest I only installed Warlords of Draenor to check out the new Garrison system. I love the concept and it actually isn’t half bad in the game. However with that being said the rest of the expansion is the same as the previous. They redid all the stats again. They realized how ridiculous a level 100 characters HP was getting so they did what they call an item or stat squish. They effectively reduced your 500k HP at level 90 back down to 30 or 40k. This happened across the board for damage and other things.

    squishy

    Mage stats before and after.

In any case if your a WoW fan there seems to be a lot of good content in the new expansion. But if you are like me and grew tired of the game back in Lich King (or earlier) then you will probably want to sit this one out as well.

    Conclusion

So as you can see I have been pretty busy on the beta front! I am looking forward to seeing these games evolve and I hope they reach their full potential. Excited for some up and coming beta’s too like Eternal Crusade, a Warhammer 40K mmo! As always if you have any specific questions feel free to email me at david@pyrocleptic.com .
